## **How to Run a Successful Online Sale Campaign**

Running a sale sounds simple enough — slap a discount on your products and watch the orders roll in. But the stores that consistently get the most out of their sale periods are the ones that approach it with a bit of strategy. The good news? You don't need a massive team or budget to do it well.

This isn't a rigid playbook. Every store is different, every audience is different, and every sale has its own goals. Think of these as tools in your kit — pick what makes sense for you.

### **1\. Start with a goal**

Before you do anything else, get clear on _why_ you're running this sale. Are you clearing excess inventory? Trying to build brand awareness? Jumping on a seasonal moment like Black Friday? Maybe you just need to stay competitive. Whatever the reason, having a clear purpose will shape every decision you make — from how deep your discounts go to how long the sale runs. Don't skip this step.

### **2\. Go early**

For big sale periods like Black Friday, most savvy retailers don't wait for the official date. Launching early means you reach customers before they've been overwhelmed with competing offers and potentially spent their budget elsewhere. It also means less noise — the official sale dates tend to be when competition is at its fiercest. Getting in early gives you a real chance to stand out.

### **3\. Build hype**

If it's a significant sale, consider building excitement before it goes live. Announcing it in advance — and even inviting customers to sign up for early access — can help you build a strong launch moment and grow your marketing list at the same time. Just weigh up whether an early announcement might cannibalise your regular sales in the lead-up, and only do it if the timing makes sense for your store.

### **4\. Create consistent creative**

For bigger campaigns, a cohesive visual theme across every touchpoint — your homepage banners, EDMs, ads, and sale collections — gives the whole campaign a polished, intentional feel. It also helps guide customers through the experience. Each time you run a new sale, refresh the look, even if it's just a colour change. This signals to returning shoppers that there's something new to explore, and it keeps the excitement alive.

### **5\. Have a hook**

A standout offer can do a lot of the heavy lifting for a sale campaign. Think a well-priced bundle, a free gift with purchase, or a hero product at an irresistible price. The best hooks have broad appeal to your audience and give people a compelling reason to click. Just make sure your landing page makes it easy for shoppers to keep browsing once they're in.

### **6\. Do the work on-site**

Once shoppers arrive, make it as easy as possible for them to find what they're looking for. Create dedicated sale collections, add a sale link to your announcement bar (it's one of the most-clicked spots on any store — don't underestimate it), and consider grouping products into "buckets" on your homepage, whether that's by discount level, category, or whatever makes sense for your range.

Make sure discounted prices are clearly shown on product pages — ideally in red with the original price crossed out. Seeing that price comparison triggers buying because it taps into loss aversion — a well-documented consumer psychology principle where people are more motivated by the fear of missing out on a saving than they are by the saving itself. The crossed-out price makes the discount feel concrete and time-sensitive, nudging shoppers to act rather than walk away empty handed. Avoid blanket coupon codes where possible; visible sale pricing does a much better job.

### **7\. Launch loudly**

When your sale goes live, tell people. Send an EDM, post across your channels, and make sure the message is clear: the sale is on, here's why you should care, here are the best deals. Don't assume people will notice on their own.

### **8\. Keep it fresh**

If your sale runs for more than a few days, a staggered rollout of offers can keep momentum going. Dropping new deals or markdowns throughout the sale period gives people a reason to come back and re-engage, rather than checking once and moving on.

### **9\. Use EDMs throughout**

Email is one of your most powerful tools during a sale. Use it to mark key moments — the launch, new offers dropping, and the closing countdown. Show off your best deals clearly and make it obvious how much shoppers can save. Don't just send one email and call it done.

### **10\. Create urgency at the close**

As the sale winds down, remind people. Most of your customers are busy and distracted — they may have meant to buy but simply forgot. A well-timed "last chance" message in the final 24–48 hours can drive a real surge in orders. FOMO is real, and a gentle nudge is all it takes for many shoppers to pull the trigger.

### **11\. Tell Google about your sale**

This one's easy to miss. When you run a sale, your conversion rate will likely spike, which can confuse Google's Smart Bidding algorithm — it may interpret the change as a signal that something's wrong, and recalibrate in ways that hurt your performance after the sale ends. Use the **Seasonality Adjustment** feature in Google Ads to flag the temporary change and protect your campaigns.

The same thinking applies to **Google Shopping** — if you're running Performance Max or Standard Shopping campaigns, make sure your product feed reflects your sale prices and that your sale price annotations are set up correctly in Google Merchant Center. Sale price annotations display a "sale price" badge on your Shopping listings, which can meaningfully improve click-through rates. It's also worth keeping an eye on your feed during the sale period, as any pricing mismatches between your site and your feed can lead to disapproved products at exactly the wrong time.

### **Use these tips, or don't**

Every sale is different, and not every tip here will apply to every store. The most important thing is to design your campaign around your specific goals, know your audience, and be creative about how you reach them.

Happy selling.
